Flash Demo

April 2nd, 2007 by admin

I propose this text as the basis of a post that is used in the flash demo. We can either have it on the blog, or on sethop.com (where the pronoun is perhaps more appropriate…

The web can be hugely distracting. There are links everywhere, always tempting me to follow them. Wiki’s and blogs are great mines of information, and it’s great that they’re linking to everything, but sometimes I wish I was a bit less inclined to actually follow the links, because sometimes I follow a few too many and forget what I was trying to find out about in the first place. Time just dissapears. If I’d been more focused, this addon would have been out a year ago.

I’m sure I’m not the only person with this problem. With regular diet and exercise aFewClues can help you as well. As well as saving you from visiting links that are broken, or that you didn’t realise were 3.6mb PDFs, it will also help you stay in flow as you use the web - less likely to get lost in the maze of twisty links, and more likely to stay on task. If a clue tells you a page is useful but offtopic, you can bookmark it, or send it to the person you think might appreciate it, and then a few seconds later, you’re back to doing what you were doing.

Notes on flash demo…

Need to demo resizing, font size, bookmarking, metadata, etc - can do that using above text? Voiceover could be something along the lines of:

These are linkclues. They appear when you mouseover links after installing the Interclue browser addon.

This is the Clueviewer. By default it pops up when you mouseover the linksclues for a moment (demonstrate), and it’ll dissapear if you move your mouse away from it. You can move the Clueviewer (demonstrate) or resize it as required (demonstrate) . It’ll stay the same size from then on (demonstrate on another link or page).

The Clueview tries to show the information most relevant to the link. See how well it works on:

* PDFs (show)
* Images (show)
* Word Docs (show)
* Anchored Links on the current page (show) , and on other pages. (show)
* Secure Pages (show) , or if you’re on a secure page, insecure pages. (show)
* Search Results, where we highlight the words you searched for (show)
* Big Pages, where we save you bandwidth by only downloading the first 128k[1] (show)
* Pages without much text (show)
* Media Files (https://interclue.com/clues-qa/content/test.mp3)

Most webpages have some useful metadata associated with them that you won’t usually see, we bring that out and put it in the metadata block on the left (demonstrate, slowly exposing each tooltip). You can collapse blocks you don’t use very often (show), or get rid of them entirely (show). You can turn them back on later in the options. Some metadata comes from 3rd party servers and concious of your privacy we allow you to turn off those clues for pages that are private to you, for instance, your intranet (demonstrate)

For your convenience and security, we do not show clues or fetch content from links that might take actions rather than lead to articles. If the domain is secure, we only show clues for links to external domains.
